Welcome to the Clans and Vendors Section of our Festival

This is a family which became, next to the Royal House of Stewart, the most powerful and influential dynasty in Scotland. The first of the name to be recorded is William de Douglas, who lived in the 12th century and witnessed a Charter by the Bishop of Glasgow, and a second Charter from William the Lion, around the year 1200. In 1263, two sons of Sir William de Douglas fought for Alexander III against the Norse at the Battle of Largs.

Brown Clan History: The Brown, or Broun surname, as it was often spelled, is very common throughout Scotland and in most instances is a simple reference to the colour brown, as in brown hair, or eyes. The name in Scotland is thought to be French-Norman in origin and was found most commonly in the East of the country. There is a suggestion of a Celtic origin for the Brown surname in the Western Isles, taken from the Gaelic word "brehons", meaning Judge.

Mission The aims of the Association shall be cultural and educational, promoting international friendship amongst those enjoying a distant kinship, encouraging through education, the perpetuation of the history, music and folklore of their forebears.

History of Clan MacLaren (Clan Labhruinn): There are two lines of MacLaren, one from Perthshire and the other, the MacLaurins, are said to have once owned the Isle of Tiree. The native clan lands of the former are in Strathearn and Balquhidder, where the MacLaren Chiefs were Hereditary Abbots of Achtow. The Argyllshire MacLarens of Tiree (Clan Labhruinn) are said to descend from Lorn, son of Fergus Mor Mac Erc, King of Dalriada in the 6th century.​

To further those goals, the Clan Lamont Society of North America (CLSNA) participates in many Highland Games and activities throughout the USA. We have also reprinted the definitive Clan Lamont history, "The Lamont Clan 1235-1935" originally published in 1935. ​

The Duffs are descended from those original Gaels who inhabited the Highlands of Scotland long before the Roman Invasion, and before the Christian era. Their ancient Gaelic name, Dhuibh, is pronounced Duff, and signifies a dark complected man with dark hair. The first Scottish Highlanders were members of the ancient German Tribes who crossed over the German Ocean and settled first on the east and north coast of the barren Island of Caledonia, later moving inland.​

About 1435 the MacGregors were dispossessed of the direct ownership of their ancient lands which were then granted by the Crown of Scotland to the Earls of Argyll and other powerful noblemen, to whom the MacGregors, as tackmen or lessees, were compelled to be subject and to pay rentals. Pervaded with a sense of injustice against these landlords and continually threatened by attacks from stronger neighboring clans, for two centuries the MacGregors lived in a state of almost continuous warfare, either in rebellion against their feudal landlords or in raids upon neighboring clans or in defence of their own lives and possessions from forays by their surrounding enemies. These interclan conflicts were not generally followed by government prosecutions..​
